The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have strongly denied allegations that they threatened to take control of the country if the 2024 elections turn violent.
These claims were attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
In a press release dated August 23, 2024, GAF clarified that they have never held a press conference declaring an intention to stage a coup.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, emphasised that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service when requested, and that this support does not imply an attempt to overthrow the government.
The press release urged civil society and the media to avoid using GAF’s name to escalate political tensions and called on all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful environment for the upcoming elections.
GAF reiterated their commitment to peace and encouraged citizens to carry out their lawful activities without fear.
