Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School, has officially withdrawn from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency election.
The headmaster is at the center of a sexual abuse case involving students of his school.
In a documentary by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure, Zakaria Abdulai is accused of sexually abusing multiple female students, hence resulting in his suspension and subsequently an order from the NDC leadership to resign or be disqualifed from the party’s upcoming election.
He was contesting the Juaben Constituency Chairman position and was the incumbent Juaben Constituency Secretary of the party.
In a letter signed by him, Zakaria Abdulai declared his withdrawal from the Secretary position as well as contesting the Constituency Chairman position.
“I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign from my position as the incumbent Secretary of the Juaben Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with immediate effect. I also wish to formally withdraw my candidature for the position of Constituency Chairman in the forthcoming NDC constituency elections, effective immediately.”
He added: “At this time, I intend to devote my attention and resources to pursuing all lawful avenues to clear my name and vindicate my position. I remain hopeful that, once these matters are resolved, I will be able to return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the NDC.”
