The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has expressed appreciation to the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, for appointing what she described as a capable team to serve on the Governing Board of the National Folklore Board.
According to the Minister, the newly constituted board will play a crucial role in strengthening the governance of the institution and advancing the protection and development of Ghana’s folklore sector.
She made the remarks during the official inauguration of the board in the Ministry’s conference room, where she charged members to provide strategic leadership and help reposition the institution to effectively carry out its mandate within the tourism and cultural ecosystem.
Welcoming the board members to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Minister noted that the ministry supervises thirteen agencies and therefore requires committed and capable individuals to guide their work.
She explained that while the day-to-day administration of the institution remains the responsibility of the Executive Director, the governing board is expected to provide policy direction, strategic guidance and oversight to ensure that the board operates efficiently and in line with national priorities.
“As governing board members, it is your collective wisdom, guidance and oversight that will drive the success of the institution,” she stated, urging them to approach their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and dedication.
The Minister further emphasised that the responsibilities of the board include providing policy direction for the management of Ghana’s folklore, protecting and regulating its commercial use, ensuring that programmes align with national development priorities, promoting transparency and accountability, and fostering collaboration with stakeholders.
“With these responsibilities in mind, I have no doubt that you are more than equal to the task,” she added.
Responding on behalf of the board after taking the oath of office, Board Chairperson, Professor Hajara Lydia Daniel, expressed gratitude to the Minister and pledged the board’s commitment to working collaboratively to strengthen the institution.
“It is a privilege to serve and to chair this board. I look forward to working with my colleagues to take the necessary steps to reposition and strengthen the board to achieve its mandate,” she said.
The newly inaugurated board comprises Felix Yaw Adjavor, William Akwetey Bonsu, Dr. Alpohose Kumaza, Dr. Ohenewaa Moreaux Kumi-Kyereme, Nii Adokwei Moffatt, Sedinam Armah Matanawui, Bernard Kofi Amarble and Gayheart Mawuli Mesiotso.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Yussif Issaka Jajah, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Joseph Kwasi Amoah, the Director of Finance and Administration, Christina Akrong, as well as other officials of the ministry.
The inauguration is expected to strengthen governance at the National Folklore Board and support ongoing efforts to safeguard and promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
