The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Dormaa East, Honorable Osei Owusu King has actively engaged with chiefs and people in the District during a familiarization tour.
The tour is designed to introduce the DCE to the authorities and other stakeholders, allow him to understand challenges of the people, and also to introduce key government initiatives.
Major highlights of the tour have been the introduction of the new “Feed Ghana” policy, a comprehensive programme aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and support for local farmers.
At Akontanim, Kyeremasu, Subinkrom, and Komkom, the District Agriculture Director, Mr. Gabriel Tuah, outlined the details of the policy to the chiefs and people. He explained that “Feed Ghana” is designed to provide robust support across several critical agricultural sectors and the support will be available for both small and large-scale farmers in different categories.
He added that the staple food categories would include farmers interested in maize, cassava, plantain, and yam farming while that of the vegetable category would cover farmers in tomatoes, peppers, okro, garden eggs, cabbage, and leafy greens production. Others are the tree crop category which would include cashew, mango, coconut and oil palm farming, with the livestock category made up of poultry and ruminants, with concentration on ruminants like pigs, goats, sheep and cattle.
According to him, to qualify for the support which includes funds and start-up kits, interested farmers are to form Farmer-Based Associations with a membership of 15 to 30 people. He stressed that this collaborative structure and its registration with government is the primary requirement for accessing the benefits of the “Feed Ghana” programme.
The DCE’s tour served the dual purpose of bringing governance to the doorsteps of the people and empowering them with opportunities for economic growth. As the team continues its engagement, the “Feed Ghana” initiative stands out as a significant opportunity to transform the District’s agriculture and economic growth.
