As Ghana marked the 68th Independence Anniversary nationwide, Dormaa East District also commemorated the Day with a parade, debate and quizzes.
Representatives from selected schools in both public and private Junior High Schools were quizzed on the political history of Ghana while the two Senior High Schools in the District namely Mansen Senior High School and Wamanafo Senior Technical Schools respectively debated ‘for’ and ‘against’ the motion “Military Interventions Have Historically Disrupted Democratic Process and Governance in Ghana”
Prior to the competitions, the contestants and their supporters, as well as their teachers, participated in a short parade at the forecourts of the District Education Unit, where they were formally addressed by authorities of the Education Directorate and the District Assembly. At the parade, the contingents were led to sing the national anthem and recite the national pledge, alongside some optional speeches.
Reflecting on the anniversary’s theme with 3Rs, “Reflect, Review, Reset,” the District Director of Education, Mr. Philip Adom Danso explained that traditions as well as events which with time have not supported the progress of this country are all currently being reflected on, to reviewed and to innovatively reset the country on a glorious pedestal. He added that the quizzes and debates are all tailored towards events related to the development of this country to increase the knowledge for learning and examination and position them to shoulder their future national responsibilities.
The District Coordinating Director, who is currently acting as the District Chief Executive, Mr Mark Maxwell Mensah, on a brief background to the Independence of Ghana, reiterated the diverse sacrifices and efforts patriotic forefathers of this country contributed to gaining the independence of this country.
He advised the student to focus on their studies and research capabilities of acquiring distinguished achievements which can secure the future of this country instead of wasting quality time on unnecessary social media issues and sexual relationships.
In relation to the competitions, the debate and quizzes ended well at the Wamfie Methodist Church, with the Mansen Senior High School, who spoke for the motion emerging winner and the Dormaa East Model Junior High School in Asuotiano, also becoming the champion against four other schools.
