Five individuals who distinguished themselves in their various categories were presented with awards at the 40th Farmers Day Celebration.
The awards included the Overall District Best Farmer, the First and Second Runners Up, the Best District Female Farmer and the Agriculture Extension Officer.
A 71-year-old farmer from Amanfi; a farming community in the Dormaa East District, Mr. Nketia Yeboah won the 2024 Overall District Best Famer Award. He was presented with a Certificate, 1 Motor Tricycle, 1 Knapsack Sprayer, 5 five Cutlasses, 1 Wellington pair of boot as well as 4 Cake Soaps and 2 Bottles of locally produced shower gel.
Mr. Yeboah’s 40 years enterprises which won him the award, included 2 acres of plantain farm, 4 acres of cassava farm, 14 acres of maize farm, 4 acres of cocoyam, 50 yam mounds, 23 acres of cocoa, 2 acres of orange farm, 32 acres of cashew farm, 3 acres of tick trees and 20.5 acres of oil palm. Others were 27 goats, 14 cows and 30 local fowls.
Speaking on the theme “Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security” at the 40th Farmers Day Celebrations at Dormaa East in the Bono Region, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Honourable Emmanuel Kofi Agyeman called on actors in the Agriculture Industry to embrace innovations, climate smart farming practices such as drought resistant crop variety as well as make use of efficient irrigation systems to combat unfavorable climate changes.
The District Chief Executive also encouraged farmers to collaborate with the Department of Agriculture to adopt technologies that improves crops yield while conserving the environment and create farming systems capable to withstand challenges to ensure food security and economic development.
Honourable Agyeman used the opportunity to remind all and sundry especially those who make use of fire in their farming and economic activities to be mindful of the glaring harmattan season in order to prevent any unforeseen circumstances.
