The National Folklore Board has officially outdoor the storytelling series “By The Fire Side” with the theme” Memories of Tales”.
This storytelling series which is part of the “Black Star Experience” will be held at the end of every month in various communities nationwide.
Disclosing this during the launch of the programme in Accra, the Executive Director of the National folklore Board, Mrs. Bernice Ann Deh-Kumah said that storytelling particularly through the popular “Ananse Stories” is deeply rooted in the culture of Ghanaians, serving as an important tool for education, cultural preservation, and community building.
The Executive Director said that this tool serves as one of the basic means of transmitting knowledge, values, and history across generations, fostering a sense of identity and unity among the people. Beyond mere entertainment, she added that storytelling plays a crucial role in shaping societal norms and reinforcing cultural identity.
Mrs. Deh-Kumah pointed out that the elderly people can attest to the fact that these stories when told interlace history, moral lessons, and present a sense of unity. According to her, the stories serve as a bridge between the past and the present, and even offer foreigners a warm and engaging introduction to Ghanaian culture.
“For instance, the Ananse Stories which usually feature clever characters and situations do illustrate important lessons about honesty, wisdom, and the consequences of our actions. So, storytelling is not just about narration but also shaping minds, preserving heritage, and building a strongly connected society.” She explained.
She used the occasion to encourage people from all works of life including children to patronize the programme to enrich their knowledge in Ghanaian folklore which will help shape their lifestyles.
